While you might (somewhat accurately) assume that any hip hop coming out of Atlanta is going to be somewhere in the spectrum of dirty south trap, focused on beats and hooks, rapper J.I.D. is trying to challenge those expectations. Newly signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, J.I.D. just dropped his debut album The Never Story, a persuasive announcement of his intention to join the upper echelons of hip hop’s lyricists. He has such range in his flow and style that he somehow manages to evoke Kendrick, Chance, Drake and Future across the entire album and sometimes even in the same song. “LAUDER” is a great example of his grit and realness but you’ll want to listen to the LP to fully appreciate what this rising star has to offer.
